With a day’s layover in the dynamic modern city of Singapore, we decided to take a stroll through Singapore’s historic Chinatown. We began at the iconic Lau Pa Sat Hawker Centre, a foodie tourist’s dream, where the scent of sizzling satay and steaming laksa fills the air beneath a grand Victorian cast-iron structure. With over 200 stalls serving a dazzling mix of local dishes as well as global cuisine, we had a delicious time! From there, we headed to Pagoda Street, a bustling pedestrian lane lined with heritage shophouses, red lanterns, and souvenir stalls. Just around the corner, the Sri Mariamman Temple rises in a burst of intricate color-Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple and is a serene stop amid the buzz. Nearby, the outdoor street market spills across narrow lanes with vendors selling everything from silk and tea to quirky keepsakes. Cusco was built to be experienced on foot. This city rewards slow exploration, with its sweeping views of the city, framed by surrounding Andean peaks. Strolling at a gentle pace is also the best way to adjust to Cusco’s high altitude (11,152 ft)! I started my trip rambling the cobbled streets of Cusco with our engaging guide, Sergio, on a free walking tour offered by Yana Tours. The tour covers all of the iconic sites as well as offering a fascinating mix of history, myths, architecture, and local culture. Tucked alongside lush rice paddies just minutes from Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Sanctuary, Bebek Tepi Sawah offers a refreshingly authentic Balinese dining experience. The scenic garden pathways surrounding open-air bamboo pavilions are like stepping into a serene oasis. On our visit, we couldn’t resist the signature Crispy Bebek (deep‑fried duck)—a must-try local classic. Delicious! This scenic segment of the Dingle Way blends tranquil countryside with breathtaking coastal views. The route follows quiet boreens (narrow rural roads), low mountain passes, and open farmland, where we were often accompanied by the distant bleating of sheep. While traversing the countryside, we used a number of stile ladders to cross over stone walls or fences that separate fields and farmland. Additionally, on the trail, of which 48% are roads, we found limited shoulder space so it was important to listen for the occasional car. The highlights included the spectacular view of the ruins of the 16th c. Minard Castle, the viaduct relic of a former railway near Lispole, and the descent into the vibrant and picturesque fishing town of Dingle. We enjoyed unusually warm and sunny weather.
