Vancouver in the fall is a misty, golden-hued blend of rain-soaked streets, fiery leaves, and mountain fog. On a day we received respite from the rain, we explored the streets of Vancouver with our fun guide, Cameron, on a free walking tour offered by Toonie Tours. The tour took us by iconic buildings like the Marine Building and the Vancouver Public Library as well as offering intriguing stories of famous historical figures and places, all from an authentic local perspective. We were moved by the indigenous murals and the true and heartbreaking story of Terry Fox, the Canadian hero who ran his Marathon of Hope for all Canadians. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park protects one of the largest and best-preserved Native American sites in the Southeast, with evidence of human life stretching back more than 17,000 years. At its heart are earthen mounds built by the Mississippian culture around 900–1100 CE, rising gently from the landscape and reflecting the spiritual, political, and communal life of the people who once gathered here. Surrounding the mounds is a network of trails that circle the ceremonial grounds, wind through wooded paths, and follow wetland corridors along the Ocmulgee River. We enjoyed our amble beneath a canopy of oak, hickory, and sweetgum before reaching the riverbanks, where double-crested cormorants stood with wings spread wide to dry in the sun and a lone great egret remained perfectly still, white against the brown water and leafless trees.
